  • AIR is enhancing their capacity to defend against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by implementing a protection system offered by a company called Akamai.  Akamai’s solution provides the most protection available on the market.

There is minimal risk involved in moving from AIR’s current DDoS protection at Rackspace to the Akamai system, but we want you to be aware that AIR is making a change. Essentially, with the new system, traffic to AIR’s websites will pass through Akamai’s network to be scrubbed for any potential DDoS attacks before reaching our systems at Rackspace. This will not result in any increased latencies or other noticeable impacts to the field.

On Saturday, September 23, AIR began routing Idaho’s inbound Internet traffic to AIR’s sites at Rackspace through Akamai’s network.

Most users will not need to do anything as a result of this change. However, since AIR’s preparations include configuring new IP addresses for some applications, schools that perform whitelisting and/or traffic shaping on their networks should be aware of these IP addresses and should double-check their configurations. Current IP addresses and their associated URLs are available upon request by contacting the Idaho Help Desk.
